Real player from real audio is almost the de facto standard for streaming audio and video across the internet. Real player collaborates with your browser to enhance your multimedia experience. Listen to web radio, check out the most recent movie reviews or preview music from the CD store before you decide to buy. Streaming means you don't have to wait for the file to download before you can play it. The Real audio site lists some sites which support the standard and there are bookmarks within the player to start you off. One note, most "real" sites will list multiple streams for the same file. The lower the stream, the more reliable the connection usually is...( although the video quality will be also be poor ). Real audio is optimized to stream on a 28.8 k connection. You can run the autoconfigure wizard to know which stream is right for you. Configure real player to automatically update you when a version update is available. Real Player will can only find sites when your browser is active. Check out the real audio site for other software products. Windows 3.x users will have to be content with real player 4.0 .

G2 is real audio's newest "suite" of streaming software. G2 sports an enhanced interface, personalized channels and includes real flash, real video in addition to the real player core. You can personalize your settings for sports, music and entertainment. The program has a large number of preset "radio networks" and real audio sites. Tired of those dinky sounds your machine makes when replaying audio files? If you're thinking about listening to high quality sound reproductions or sampling music off the internet, you'll need Nullsoft's Winamp. Winamp is almost the de facto standard windows MP3 player, which reads 22 audio file types. You might be surprised by the sound quality even your tiny speakers can produce through Winamp. You'll want change both the appearance and sound quality using the "skins" and "plugin". This release has four basic components within the interface. The player, with volume control, balance, and visual indicators; the equalizer; playlist and minibrowser. Although the program itself is tiny, Winamp can be demanding on your CPU's processor so make sure you have at least a Pentium 133 with 32mb ram, and a full duplex sound card. Use the Winamp browser to locate streaming audio from both radio and file servers, on shoutcast . Once you've tried it, you won't go back !!

One of the best allround MP3 tools, jukebox is an encoder, decoder, CD ripper and supports for streaming audio (including real audio !). One important feature in this version is ability to convert your CD audio directly to MP3. You can even specify the type of compression you would like to use and the level of error correct. Use MusicMatch to create an advanced local database for your music sorted by artiste, genre and other preferences. Help is available within the interface and through a tutorial. Of course, Jukebox is a resource hungry application. Don't use it unless you have at least a Pentium 166Mhz, 32mb of ram, a fast CD rom drive and over 100mb of free space. And, your hard drive is likely to become fragmented once you start using encoding audio files, so you could benefit from an advanced defrag tool.
