Excite, from Excite@Home offers web-based mail, chat, message boards and advanced search options. The start point is the "personalization manager", which customizes the layout, and content channels you select. Choose from news, shopping, sports, horoscope and other services. Excite's search options include an adult filter designed restrict certain types of content and very detailed searchable categories. Look for multimedia content on excite including voice mail, voice enabled chat rooms,scheduled "concerts" and interviews, desktop radio, and a large searchable index of movies and videos. Excite's people finder is based on four core services namely a members directory, reverse telephone lookup, e-mail lookup and personal home pages. Snap.com is a
search engine and more. Looking for free online mail, chat, message boards, e-mail lookup,
maps, an address finder, stock quotes, yellow pages, classifieds and online auction ? Even
if you're not interested in the whole deal, Snap customizes your snap page by associating
your snap login with the channels you select. Customize news, weather, sports scoreboard,
horoscope, and bookmarks. Check in with the snap guides to entertainment, shopping,autos,
health, sports, travel and the internet. Or check out the Multimedia links for
cartoons, games, movie previews, music videos and MP3's indexed by title and category.
Snap has "power search" features which allows you to filter your search results,
and more search categories than any other search engine. Look for the
"ivillage" discussion forums and the snap "picture finder", which does
a great job of locating pictures of almost anything, and provides the links to the sites
where the images reside.
Yahoo! is probably the most popular search engine and its links are built by users who subscribe sites. Your Yahoo! account is your gateway to free online mail, chat rooms, message boards, "live" auction and travel sites. Yahoo! has an extensive list of online games, classifieds and personals. Customize your Yahoo! page for TV listings, new headlines, weather, stock quotes, and sports scoreboard. Yahoo! mail has very advanced features including filters to block unwanted mail and a spellchecker. Use the online calendar to keep track of reminders, your thesaurus and zip code finder, when you're in trouble. Yahoo! does have an enhanced search feature and wide categories to search in. Tune into to Yahoo! radio for music sorted by category. Yahoo! intuitive Instant Messenger notifies you of an incoming e-mail and now supports live chat and voice mail. Yahoo! has a fairly extensive "how to" support for novice users including "how to add your site". Yahoo has an effective people finder and directory service, which can be viewed online or added to your e-mail client.
Hotbot has a no frills, research-driven approach to searching the web. While there is the usual web mail, message boards, chat and "channel" content, the strength of Hotbot is its very advanced search capabilities. The result is a robust search engine. There are five core services. FTP search, supported by Lycos, allows you to search by file type. Find all your MP3 (music) sites that way !! Map search is a mapquest service which links a travel guide, directions and local city guide. Then elibrary.com is a research service, which produces content from a wide range of sources (you choose !!) including books, reports and news transcripts. Carreerbuilder network, is one of the largest job hunters on the internet. The fifth service is a domain search by category. Hotbot makes is very easy to subscribe new sites and find the newest links. Hotbot uses Dejanews (one of the largest newgroups index services) to help you find discussion groups for any topic. Hotbot has been consistently rated as a leading search engine and is the home of wired and suck magazines.
